I bought this book after completing the AMIA review course. I have not had formal clinical informatics training but I've worked in the field for about 10 years - the last five years full-time. I started my review using the AMIA course. Between this book and the AMIA course I ended up scoring well above the minimum passing score. The content areas were categorized by quartile and I was in either the top 50% or 75% for all topics. So, the combination should provide anyone with the knowledge needed to pass.The AMIA course was helpful but did not feel prepared after reviewing all the material and reviewing many of the references. It felt disjointed in some areas and the AMIA practice test included a number of questions not at all addressed in the PPTs or by the lectures.So I tried this book out. It filled in some of the missing information. Overall, It was a great read. It really pulled together and solidified a number of key concepts for me - especially related to the softer topics. I found the book format superior the than PPTs and lectures.On the whole, this book is less detailed than the AMIA course. If you only want high yield material, this does a good job of covering that. However, there were some topics in the actual test not covered by this book at all.My only significant complaint is the book is littered with errors. Sometimes only minor spelling or grammar issues. However, in some cases the errors are fairly non-trivial. For instance, one of the more important 2x2 tables (figure 3-5) lists "type 1 error" and "false positive" in the disease column with a negative result. The "false negative" and "type II error" is also in the wrong cell. These are topics that are very likely to be on the test, too! Later, in the numerical methods section toward the end of the book a similar table lists the test result in the column headings and disease state in the row headings - this isn't standard and as a result somewhat confusing. I'm not sure why the author would do that.Once you get past the mistakes, though, it is a good read. I like the writing style. I think it did a better job of explaining a number of topics than the AMIA course. When you consider it costs substantially less, it is a very good value.The practice test in the book is helpful. It asks a lot of relevant questions but it is much easier than the AMIA practice test. The AMIA practice test format and difficulty is closer to the actual test.Overall, the book is a really good value. I wouldn't recommend using it alone if you are someone like who has not done a formal fellowship. However, I do highly recommend it as a supplement to the AMIA course or some other more thorough reading material.
